Sunday saw us host our first ever Love Me Sew Crafternoon!

As Sam mentioned in our previous post ‘Boys can sew!‘, a Crafternoon is a fun sewing session we run for parties, hen dos, or groups of pals who just want to get together and create! Sunday’s Crafternoon was to celebrate the lovely Laura’s birthday with four createes travelling to Leeds from Teesside and Wakefield (in the snow!) to take part in designing and making their own eye masks.

Meeting at 1pm, we kicked off the Crafternoon with a spot of lunch, complete with home-made sausage rolls (delish!), topped off with scones and jam, and a glass of fizz!. This gave the girls a chance to catch up and time for us to explain what the plan for the afternoon was and to also find out if they had any previous sewing experience.

All the girls were novices, some not even having used a sewing machine at school – which is actually quite shocking…let’s get these basic, but very important, skills back on every school’s curriculum! But that Jamie Oliver-style campaign is for another day…

Once the girls had chosen their fabrics and thought about how they wanted to decorate their eye masks, off they went on the sewing machine; tentatively at first but once they’d practiced using our sewing exercises, soon grew in confidence.

They all did a great job! Despite a few little mishaps with the ‘too hot’ iron and tangled threads, the finished result was five lovely eye masks and five very proud girls.

As far as Sam and I were concerned, we thought the afternoon went brilliantly. With a good size group, we managed to give everyone enough attention and help when needed, and everyone seemed to really enjoyed it – which is our main aim for the Crafternoons.
On reading the feedback forms that we gave the girls at the end of the session, our thoughts were confirmed will all five girls rating the Crafternoon 5 out of 5 -termed ’craftilicious’! Plus some lovely comments and some really good ideas for future Crafternoons and other items they would like to make…

Really good – very calm, patient, not too much tricky terminology. Demo models were really helpful to look at. Didn’t feel conscious of asking silly questions and felt very encouraged. In Sam’s words -perfect! Comment about teaching style.

Loved making the eye mask and I will use it. Would love to make a small bag to keep it in with my ear plugs.

Seeing my finished article! Very proud of myself.” In response to ‘Favourite part of the Crafternoon?’

The girls L-R: Laura, Sarah, Lindsay, Jane and Elaine

Thank you for taking part ladies, your eye masks are beautiful.
